| Nancy...there are two types of meningitis...viral and bacterial. Bacterial is the worse and it can kill you. Viral is just like a virus--it has to just run its course. I don't think there are any medications for it. Bacterial I am assuming is treated with an antibiotic just like any other bacterial infection. I'm pretty sure a bone marrow transplant is not needed. But you are right, the symptoms do include a stiff neck. But I thought Abby said her throat was sore, not her neck. |
You are so correct TerriinTX!!!
While it usually depends on the age and health of the person, Viral Meningitis is typically not very serious or life threatening. It can become serious under certain conditions, but most often the person is treated at home with asprin, extra liquids, and extra rest. It just has to run it's course. However hospitlization may be required for IV fluids to prevent dehydration or for more serious pain control. However it's usually treated at home.
Bacterial Meningitis is the worse of the two and requires hospitlization for antibiotic treatment. If left untreated it can be fatal.
A sore throat is NOT a typical symptom of meningitis. Stiff neck, yes, sore throat no. Bone morrow is not needed to treat either form of meningitis.
