Colleen may have returned to the disappointment of J.T.'s commitment to Mac, but off-screen Adrianne Leon (Colleen) is nothing less than thrilled to join Y&R. "It's always exciting when you get to pick up something different and get out of your every day routine. I'm looking forward to the challenge."
No stranger to the soap world, Adrianne left her Emmy nominated role as Brook Lynn Ashton on General Hospital with the producer's permission. "[GH Executive Producer Jill Farren Phelps] said, 'We love you, but if you have a better opportunity somewhere and we don't have something to offer you, then I would feel terrible holding you here.' The next Wednesday I booked it. I called Jill. It was a huge shock. I don't think any of us saw it coming, but here we are."
When describing the difference between her former character and Colleen, she shared, "There's similarities, except that Brook Lynn was very street. That element of class and respect [was missing] – though it could have been there because she's a Quartermaine. It's just that she was raised by Lois and touring rock concerts all year long. She had the feisty street. She would go up and hit people. Colleen wouldn't. She's strong, not street. She's a little classier."
Filling a recast part is of course not without pressure. "A lot of the Colleen fans came over to my Adrianne Leon board and started posting thing like, 'We just want you to know that this is what is what, so you don't screw things up. We really want to support you.' I skimmed through it, but I didn't want to go into detail because I did want to come in and have a fresh start with the character. Coming in as a recast was stressful already, so trying to mimic what she did… I got this for a reason. Something I did, so I didn't want to lose that element."
Fans should anticipate some differences which she points out are realistic. "The character's had a while. She's grown up. She's been in New York for a year – New York itself can change a person, so I wanted to bring that fresh element to that character. She's 20 now and she's had a year of college. She's coming back. She's still the same person, but she's growing up."
Her first scenes were with Don Diamont (Brad) and he welcomed her with open arms. "He was great. He sat down and said, 'We can run it as many times as you want. If you need anything….' He's so professional, so it was calming to work with him. I was worried because when it comes time, I'm used to going into that street, 'Whassup!' thing. Colleen you just can't. It doesn't match the character."
As for losing J.T. while Colleen was gone, she said, "I don't think she has any expectations set in stone, but it's always hard to see your first love with someone else. Seeing that everybody is a big fan of Kevin Fishers? She was definitely not expecting that. She's coming back with a whole new determination to get what she wants."
When asked if there was anyone she looks forward to kissing, she delighted, "I have to tell you, there's a lot of cute guys here. As long as they keep 'em coming, I'll be happy [laughs]."
